Carving a Living Out Of Books Given a Whole New Meaning

I stumbled upon the rather marvellous purely by accident, and after going through some of their amazing posts on incredible art and design projects I came across these particular wonders (click to make bigger!):

Believe it or not, these are real books carved by the artist Guy Laramee (, who has this to say on the matter:”We are currently told that the paper book is bound to die. The library, as a place, is finished. One might ask so what? Do we really believe that “new technologies” will change anything concerning our existential dilemma, our human condition?…So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills. Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS.”Well quite. What I THINK Guy means is that it doesn’t necessarily matter HOW we consume stories and knowledge just so long as we continue to do so. This is certainly something the publishing world has been thinking about recently, and certainly something we at Hot Key Books are very aware of.

Anyway, if nothing else Guy has reminded us all once again of the beauty of books – even if in a slightly unusual format. And it’s a good use of any old books you might have lying around! Just don’t expect me to produce anything anywhere near as beautiful. I’m not that handy with a scalpel, as Jet will tell you…
