YAY! It’s my turn to pick the book for this month’s Hot Key Book Club. For June we’ll be reading…
WIDE SARGASSO SEA by Jean Rhys
When I came across this book I instantly wanted to read it as it is considered the prequel to one of my favorite classics, JANE EYRE. Set to a beautiful Caribbean backdrop it tells the story of Mr. Rochester’s first wife, Bertha Mason, who’s real name, is in fact, Antoinette Cosway, a young Creole-woman who he meets and marries during his travels to Jamaica. In his attempts to suppress her rebellious and her outspoken nature, Rochester locks her away where she then becomes the infamous madwoman in the attic.
Was it only me, or were you completely terrified, yet slightly intrigued by, Bertha Mason in Charlotte Bronte’s JANE EYRE? I still get shivers every time I think about her! But I’ve always wondered, who is this woman? How did she ended up imprisoned in an attic? And ultimately, what’s made her so angry? When reading WIDE SARGASSO SEA I hope for these pressing questions to all be answered!
Don’t worry if you haven’t read Jane Eyre, as this book is it’s precursor! It can definitely be considered a stand-alone. A piece of feminist writing that explores interesting themes like patriarchy, race, and identity and top it off a beautiful, exotic setting and an inspiring heroine.
I hope you will join me in reading this month’s book, which is a short one this time – only 192 pages! I hope it will inspire you to re-read the awesome book that is Jane Eyre or will encourage you to read a literary classic you haven’t gotten round to reading yet…
Will you be reading along with us? We’ll post our review at the end of the month. You can follow us on GoodReads to see how we’re doing!
