Top Ten Books I'd Gladly Take On Holiday This Year

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday was written by our intern, Kunmi.

Have you booked your summer trips yet? I’ve been thinking about which books I want to take on holiday with me. So here are just a few of my not-particularly-cheery, but ‘I-love-them-and-you-just-might-too’ books that I would take on holiday anytime!

1. COMMITTED – Elizabeth Gilbert

This is sequel to Eat, Pray, Love – which I loved. I’ve bought this book and haven’t gotten the time to read it yet, but seeing as the first one was great, I just know I’m going to love Committed. Probably not more though.

2. AMERICANAH – Chimamanda Adichie

Okay, this is cheating. Because I’ve read this one before (my condolences to the other books on this list. I don’t have favourites! I think). But I just love it so much, and Chimamanda Adichie is one of my all-time favourite authors. Love her. So I’ll be reading this again this summer!

Ghana-Must-Go3. GHANA MUST GO – Taiye Selasi

It’s one of those ones that I’ve just always looked at on Amazon and never put in my ‘basket’. For some weird, unknown reason. So, it’s my birthday soon… *not-so-subtle hint hint*.

I’ve been doing some work experience at Hot Key Books (whoop!) for two weeks and this is one of the many books which stood out to me… or called my name… or however you’d like to call it. Definitely look forward to tucking into this.

Book Review The Help

5. THE HELP – Kathryn Stockett

I loved the movie, in a love-hate kind of way. And I hear the book is WA-A-Y better, so I’d like to see for myself!

Heaven is for Real6. HEAVEN IS FOR REAL – Lynn Vincent

Seen the preview for the movie? So have I. And I heard there was a book, so, same as The Help, I thought WHY NOT?

7. WE WERE LIARS – E. Lockhart

Simply because I’ve heard SO much about this. In fact, it’s sitting on my desk right now. I’ve already read the first few pages and I look forward to finishing it.

8. THIS BOOK IS GAY – James Dawson

They had me at the title. And secondly, this is another book I have heard a lot about. And all these lovely Hot Key people can’t be lying, can they?

Sense and Sensibility9. SENSE AND SENSIBILITY – Jane Austen

I know, I know. But Sixth Form got me into Jane Austen, and it’s an ongoing love affair I don’t see going away anytime soon. I loved Pride and Prejudice and now I’m determined to go through Jane Austen’s entire works!

Kemi Journal front cover10. KEMI’S JOURNAL – Abidemi Sanusi

African literature is my thing, so I’m constantly (and they’re everywhere) looking for new authors and new reads. In the process, I stumbled upon this book and loved it. It was so honest and relatable. Definitely see myself re-reading this gem this summer!
